This lab seeks to use gravimetric analysis to obtain the formula of an unknown sulfate sample.  Gravimetric analysis is usually done by making the analyte (the thing being analyzed) insoluble (in this case, making it for large crystals) and then filtering and drying out the water.  When the mass of the precipitate is found, through stoichiometric calculations, information such as the mass, number of moles and percentage of the sulfate content in said precipitate can be found.  When the percentage of the sulfate content in the precipitate is found it can be compared to various alkali sulfates to find what the unknown sulfate is.
