Purpose/Background Information

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the CaCO3 content of an anti-acid pill. The sample used was reacted with an excess amount of hydrochloric acid of known concentration to determine how much HCl was left once the acid pill reacted with the calcium carbonate in the sample.  The reaction: CaCO3(s) + 2H3O+(aq)---> Ca2+(aq) + CO2(g) + 3H2O(l), was used in this experiment.  It illustrates the CaCO3 present in the anti-acid pill, which removes excess HCl, therefore making the determination of the amount of CaCO3 in the sample easily obtainable.
