Question:  How can you determine the molecular weight of a compound by measuring the freezing point depression?

The purpose of this experiment is to determine the molecular weight of a compound using the freezing point depression calculated.  By breaking bonds and forming new bonds, a solution is formed.  Energy is required to break the bonds between the ions and molecules of a solute when it is placed in a solvent and heated.  The ions formed or molecules freed form bonds with the free solvent molecules, and releases energy in either a positive change(endothermic solution process) or negative change(exothermic). The bond that is formed between the solute and solvent molecules is strong, therefore less solvent molecules are available to escape into the gas phase resulting in lower vapor pressure.  The standard freezing point phase transition occurs at atmospheric pressure and the standard boiling point phase transition at atmospheric pressure.
