Data Collection:

Unknown 1 Procedure:

1. Put 1 mL unknown 1 into test tube and 2mL or 6 M NaOH into the same test tube with the plastic pipet.

2. With another plastic pipet and test tube, transfer 2 mL of unknown 1 into tube and add 2 to 3 drops of 6 M HCl. (Precipitate formed), so continued to add 6 M HCl drop by drop

3. Centrifuged the mixture and added 1 drop of 6 M HCl into each separated test tube holder. (No precipitate appears-therefore added supernatant into test tube)

4. Add 4 mL of deionized water to precipitate.

5. Heat test tube swirling it in water (80 F) for approximately 5 minutes.

6. Centrifuge test tube to sparate supernatant from solid

7. Add 10 drops of 6 M ammonia to precipitate, and 6 M HCl drop by drop.  The precipitate reappears

8. Divided solution into 2 test tubes and added 3 M H2SO4- several drops to each

Unknown 2: Procedure

1. Added 1 mL of unknown 2 into test tube (labeled) and 2 mL of 6 M NaOH into tube.

2. Transferred 2 mL of unknown into a 2nd test tube and add 2 to 3 drops of 6 M HCl (no precipitate formed) so saved solution for procedure 6.

3. Add 6 M NaOH to the supernatant from procedure 2 and make sure precipitation is complete.

4. Add 0.5 mL more NaOH while stirring from procedure 2

5. Add 6 M NaOH to supernatant

6. Add 3 mL of 6 M ammonia and stir well, using precipitate add 1 mL of 3% hydrogen peroxide to precipitate

7. Stir and heat in water bath until no gas is generated.

8. Add 3 M H2SO4 drops until mixture is acidic, and separate supernatant from precipitate, add 2 drops of 0.2 M K4(F(CN)6) to solution

9. Add 1 drop HCl to 5 drops dimethylgloyoxine.
