Introduction

The purpose of this lab is to identify the anions present in a mixture of solutions. This is done by a qualitative analysis where different reagents are added to the unknown solution to try to determine what the unknown is. By knowning which reactions will occur if specific ions are present, it can determine what the unknown solution is. Determining the anions in a solution can be simplier than identifying a cation, since separations are not usually needed. In this experiment four different anions are being analyzed: phosphate, chloride, sulfate and nitrate.
