Equipment:

-Data Collection System

-Spectrometer

-Cuvette

-Sensor extension cable

-Test tubes (6), large

-Test Tube Rack

-Graduated Cylinder, 10-mL

-0.1 M Iron(lll)chloride, 10mL

-0.1 M Copper(ll)chloride, 10mL

-0.1 M Cobalt(ll) chloride, 10mL

-0.1 M Nickel(ll) chloride, 10mL

-0.1 M Sodium chloride, 10mL

-Color Chart

-Wash bottle with distilled water

-Marking Pen

Methods:

Set Up:

1. Start a new experiment on the data collection system

2. Set up the spectrometer

3. Add about 10mL of each of the 5 solutions into separate, labeled test tubes

Collect Data:

1. Display Absorbance on the y-axis of a graph with wavelength on the x-axis.

2. Start data recording.

3. Measure the absorbance of the five solutions following the steps below:

     A. Rinse the cuvette with a small portion of the first solution and fill the cuvette two-thirds full.  Wipe the cuvette clean and dry and place it into the spectrometer.

     B. Dispose of the solution and rinse the cell throughly with water.

4. Stop data recording, display all data runs and print the graph

5. Save the experiment and clean up according to teacher's instructions
