Driving Question: Why do solutions have different colors?

 

Introduction & Background:

 

The purpose of this lab is to determine why solutions have different colors.  When light hits an object, the object absorbs some of the light waves and the rest of the light is reflected.  The light that is reflected is the light in which we can see.  The color of solutions is observed by using a Red Tide to find the absorbed colors.  When the light is transmitted, using a Red Tide, through the solution, photons with a certain wavelength can be absorbed by species in the solution.  

 

There are three primary colors when discussing light: red, green and blue. When combining all three colors, white is the result.  Solutions that are clear absorb all three colors, therefore they do not reflect a color we can see.  During this lab, five different solutions colors are looked at, and the absorbing colors are found.
