Induced pluripotent stem cells were originally formed by removing the DNA material from an adult cell and then transferring it into an embryo so that it would become pluripotent. It was then found that it was possible to make the adult cell pluripotent by introducing the genes that make an embryo pluripotent into the adult cell.
