Drawbacks

Disadvantages are that if the weather gets to a point where it is too cold, the sand will clump together and freeze, rendering it useless. Also, the sand will only work effectively if it is on the surface of the ice. If more snow falls over it, it is no longer useful and will need to be reapplied. If the sand is spread in a heavy traffic area, the sand will move off the road quickly and will need to be maintained regularly so there is always traction in that area. (Day 1)

Ramifications

The effect that this way of managing ice streets causes can be rather severe. After time, the sand will collect on the side of the road and fall into drainages ditches. This can wash the sand into streams and lakes, damaging them. Because of the amount of sand needed when using this form of maintenance, cleanup after storms is a big concern and event.  After time, some particles can be ground up so small that they become a form of air pollution which is harmful the environment and the lungs of those who breathe it in.
