Materials and Equipment:

- Data collection system                  - 0.1 M Copper (II) chloride (CuCl2), 10 mL

- Spectrometer                               - 0.1 M Cobalt (II) chloride (CoCl2), 10 mL

- Cuvette                                       - 0.1 M Nickel (II) chloride (NiCl2), 10 mL

- Sensor extension cable                 - 0.1 M Sodium chloride(NaCl), 10 mL

- Test tubes (6), large                     - Color chart

- Test tube rack                              - Wash bottle with distilled water

- Graduated cylinder, 10-mL              - Marking pen

- 0.1 M Iron (III) chloride (FeCl3), 10 mL

Methods:

1. Start a new experiment in the data collection system.

2. Set up the spectrometer.

3. Add about 10 mL of each of the 5 solutions into separate, labeled test tubes.

4. Observe the color of the solutions.

5. Display Absorbance on the y-axis of a graph with Wavelength on the x-axis.

6. Start data recording.

Measure the absorbance of the five solutions following the steps below:

7. Rinse the cuvette with a small portion of the first solution and fill the cuvette two-thirds full.

8. Wipe the cuvette clean and place it into the spectrometer.

9. Dispose of the solution and rinse the cell thoroughly with water.

10. Stop data recording.

11. Display all data runs.

12. Print the graph.

13. Save the experiment and clean up according to your teacher's instructions.
