Introduction/Background:

Qualitative analysis is commonly used to identify the substances present in a mixture. In order to conduct this analysis, chemical properties of an unknown substance are determined by systematically reacting the unknown with a number of different reagents. The ions in the solution can then be identified by identifying what a particular reaction will produce if a specific ion is present. If the products of a reaction cannot definitely confirm the presence of a specific ion, the components of the mixture must be seperater and tests for particular ions must be performed.

Purpose:

To identify the unknown cations present in a mixture of solutions.
