Introduction/Background:

 

Gravimetric analysis is a quantitative method used in determining the amount of analyte in a sample based on the mass of the solid. In order to perform such analysis, the analyte must be transformed into a water soluble form which will precipitate out of the solution and can then be isolated by filtration and drying. The next step of the analysis involves obtaining the mass of the sample. Then, the mass, number of moles, and percentage of sulfate content in the precipitate can be determined from the mass and stoichiometric considerations.

 

Purpose:

 

To use gravimetric analysis to obtain the formula of an unknown sulfate sample.
