Introduction/Background:

A hydrated salt, is a naturally occurring or manmade salt, with water molecules bound within its crystal structure. The percentage of water in a hydrate can be determined by heating a known quantity until dehydration is achieved. The dehydration results in decreased mass, allowing the amount of water in the hydrate to be calculated.

Purpose:

To determine the percentage of water in a hydrate (CuSO4).
