Abstract:

 

The purpose of this experiment is to determine how to use conductometry to help obtain the concentration of a Ba(OH)2 solution. In order to perform this lab, a basic titration will be performed using Ba(OH)2 and H2SO4 . During the titration, the conductivity will be measured, and the graph produced will be used to determine the equivalence point. The solution conducts electricity due to the presence of ions. But, when a strong electrolyte is added to another strong electrolyte, a precipitate will form and the ion concentration and conductivity will decrease accordingly. Continued addition of the second electrolyte continues to lower the ion concentration and the conductivity until the equivalence point is reached. At the equivalence point, all the ions are removed and conductivity is at its minimum. But, conductivity increases if more of the second electrolyte is added after the equivalence point. As stated, the results of this lab will inevitably allow the determination of the equivalence point and the concentration of Ba(OH)2.
