Materials: crucible with lid, crucible tongs, Bunsen burner, ring stand, clay triangle, balance, wash bottle, copper sulfate

 

Procedure:

  1. Obtain a crucible with a lid and record its mass
  2. Put the crucible with the lid on the clay triangle over the Bunsen burner and heat it for fifteen minutes,  allow it to cool to room temperature, and record its mass
  3. Repeat heating and cooling until you have two measurements within 10 mg of each other
  4. Put 75 g of hydrated copper sulfate into the crucible
  5. Record the mass of the crucible, lid, and the contents
  6. Return the crucible, lid, and the contents to the heat source and continue heating until the copper sulfate turns white and allow the crucible to cool to room temperature
  7. Record the mass of the crucible
  8. Repeat heating and cooling until you have two measurements within 10 mg of each other
  9. Squeeze a few drops of water into the anhydrous sample and dispose of the sample properly

    10. Wash the crucible and clean up properly
