Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to determine the stoichiometric coefficients in the of chemical reaction of silver and an unknown ion.


Background: Ionic compounds dissociate in solutions to form ions. These ions are what allow the  solution to conduct electricity. The greater the number of ions in the solution, the greater conductivity the solution will have. The conductivity of the solution can be reduced if in a chemical reaction the ions are removed as a gas or a precipitate. Ions can be removed in the form of a precipitate by creating solutions with different amounts of silver and the unknown. After all of the reactions have occurred, the one with the lowest conductivity will be closest to the theoretical stoichiometric ratio.
