Purpose: To determine how the components of Kool-Aid can be separated with chromatography

Background: Chromatography is a method used to separate substances based on their differences in behavior between a mobile phase (solvent or eluent) and a stationary phase (substrate). The stationary phase interacts with the substances in the mixture based on many different things. They include charge, relative solubility, or absorption, among others. The mobile phase carries each substance at a rate that is dependent upon how the substance was attracted to the stationary phase. The substances in the mixture separate if their interactions with the substrate and the solvent are significantly different. In this lab, grape Kool-Aid was the sample and it was made up of blue and red components. A C18 Sep-Pack cartridge was used to separate these components. The most polar component will come out first and the least polar component, which is retained in the cartridge, will come out last.
