Discussion/Conclusion:

The purpose of this experiment was to identify the cations present in a solution.  After reacting the unknown solution with various other substances, like NaOH for ammonia, it was concluded that the unknown solution only contained silver ions. Whether or not a substance will dissolve or precipitate determines its solubility. A series of experiments were done to target the presence of certain cations in the solution. When all of the experiments were done, the only cation present was Ag+. According to the solubility rules in Table 3, this result makes sense. Like any lab, this one had some sources of error. The main one of these is human error made in regard to measurements throughout the lab. In conclusion, this experiment showed the relationship between solubility and cations. The data support the flow chart and the prediction. To make this experiment better in the future, more trials could be conducted and the instructions could be more clear.
